The Osaka departure costs more for a plain reason: the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto, and the Kintetsu train back from Nara, are bundled into it. It also starts earlier, meeting at Hotel Granvia Osaka at 07:15. The deciding factor is the endpoint. All three Osaka options finish at Osaka Namba in the early evening and do not return to Kyoto, so check the meeting points before committing if your hotel is in Kyoto.

The case for the coach is arithmetic and logistics. Three Kyoto sites and two Nara sites in one run, with every transfer handled, admissions already paid, and a licensed guide explaining what you are looking at in English. Between Kasuga Taisha and Todai-ji you stroll through Nara Park, a walk of 20 to 30 minutes among the deer, which is a genuinely pleasant stretch rather than a transfer to endure. Doing this independently would mean four train legs and a lot of ticket queues.
The counterweight is the clock. Each stop gets roughly 40 to 70 minutes, which is enough to see the highlights and not enough to linger. A traveller who wants an hour alone at one temple, or to photograph the Golden Pavilion in late light, is better served going independently and accepting the extra cost and planning that brings. This is a survey day, not a deep one.
The season changes what the day feels like rather than whether it runs. The tour operates on the operator's published calendar dates with a minimum of one guest, so a quiet Tuesday in February and a crowded April afternoon are the same itinerary in very different clothes. Whatever date you eye, the reservation deadline is fixed: 15:00 the day before departure.

Kyoto hit 39.7 C on 23 July 2026, the third hottest day since records began in 1880. Four of the six hottest days on record fall in 2018, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Obon is not a national holiday. Mountain Day on 11 August is the only statutory holiday in the month, but domestic travel peaks around Obon regardless.

Todai-ji is back on winter hours from November, so October still has the longer 07:30 to 17:30 opening.
The maples are NOT reliably at their peak in November in Kyoto city. The official colouring date is a December date.
The Japan Meteorological Agency records Kyoto maple colouring at a normal date of 5 December, 10 December in 2025, as late as 20 December in 2024 and as early as 10 November in 1976. Leaf fall normally follows on 18 December.
The widely repeated "mid-November koyo in Kyoto" line is folklore. The Japan Meteorological Agency's own Kyoto maple-colouring normal is 5 DECEMBER, and the last two observed dates were 10 December 2025 and 20 December 2024. The site says the real thing.
One practical wrinkle: a few of the stops close on specific days of the week. When that happens, the itinerary substitutes another site rather than skipping the slot, so the day stays full either way.
The route, in order, is Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, the Kyoto Imperial Palace, lunch on the lunch options, then Kasuga Taisha and Todai-ji with Nara Park. That is the whole of it. Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama and Byodo-in are not on this tour, so if any of those is the reason you are travelling, plan it as a separate day.
There is no hotel pickup on any option. Kyoto travellers meet at the Sunrise Tours desk on level B1 of Kyoto Avanti, across from Kyoto Station, with arrival by 08:20 for an 08:30 departure. Osaka travellers meet at 07:15 on the ground floor of Hotel Granvia Osaka, in front of the elevator, and leave at 07:25.
Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama with its bamboo grove, Byodo-in and Gion are not stops on this tour. They sit on this map because travellers look for them when planning a Kyoto day. Reaching any of them means a separate trip, on your own time.
